Energy Agriculture - Ensuring Food Security and Energy Security

Lu Ming, deputy director of the National People's Congress Agriculture and Rural Committee, said at the 2004 annual meeting of the China Association of Science and Technology that the conditions for the development of energy agriculture in China are basically met, and energy agriculture will become a win-win measure to ensure food security and energy security. Lu Ming said that the enthusiasm of farmers for grain production in recent years is not high, mainly because the price of food is too low, even to the point where they lose money. To increase the enthusiasm of farmers for grain production, there must be market pull. If food can be used for food as well as energy, its market capacity will expand by more than one-third. In this sense, the development of energy agriculture will be an effective measure to promote the increase of farmers' income and mobilize the enthusiasm of farmers for growing grain. Lu Ming said that food security and energy security are not contradictory. Energy agriculture can use barren land, not compete with or compete with food, and use mostly waste from agricultural production, such as corn stalks, rice straw, wheat straw, etc. In 1999, the United States established the world's first production line for the production of alcohol from fiber raw materials. Energy agriculture is still in its infancy in China. Domestically, the research topic of “producing alcohol by fiber raw materials” has been included in the “Tenth Five-Year Plan” research project. According to reports, energy and agriculture are mainly developed using biomass energy, and biofuels are used in four ways: direct combustion, physical and chemical conversion, bio-chemical conversion, and vegetable oil utilization. Energy crops have less pollution to the environment than mineral energy, and are more widely used than wind energy and geothermal energy. They are called “green energy”. Lu Ming said that moving from "black energy" to "green energy" is a general trend. The development of material energy can effectively extend the use of petroleum resources on Earth. In the future world, biogas may be a substitute for natural gas, and alcohol may be a substitute for gasoline. Experts classify energy crops into four categories: crops for the purposes of alcohol, such as corn, sugar cane, sweet sorghum, sweet potatoes, etc.; crops for the production of fuel oil, such as rape, green jade trees, etc.; crops for direct burning Anaerobic fermentation of crops. Lu Ming believes that the conditions for vigorously developing energy crops have gradually developed in China. Agricultural workers must seize this development opportunity and vigorously research and cultivate energy crops. At present, household biogas technology has developed relatively well in rural areas. Large and medium-sized biogas is mainly used for the treatment of municipal sewage and domestic garbage. Gasoline alcohol made from the mixture of alcohol and gasoline is also used as a vehicle fuel in pilot projects in China since 2001. .
