Expected: 2020 U.S. diabetes expenditure 3.35 trillion

Business News Agency January 24th According to a recent UnitedHealth Group report on "American Diabetes: Challenges and Opportunities for the Next Decade," the report shows that if you continue to develop with the current trend, by 2020, more than 50%. Americans will suffer from diabetes or pre-diabetes, which will put a 3.35 trillion dollar burden on the U.S. medical system. The report estimated that by the end of 2020, the cost of diabetes and prediabetes treatment will account for 10% of the total US Medicare spending, and the average annual expenditure will be close to US$500 billion, which is a significant increase from the original estimate of US$194 billion.

The report also proposes practical solutions to improve people's health and life expectancy. If the prevention and control of diabetes is carried out nationwide, it can save 250 billion U.S. dollars over the next 10 years, including the federal government’s US$144.4 billion in medical insurance, medical subsidies and other public projects.

Solutions include preventing obesity and intervening in the lifestyle of prediabetic people and conducting drug control programs nationwide.

Need to coordinate actions

Simon Stevens, executive vice president of the United Health Group, said: "In the United States, diabetes is like a time bomb. Fortunately, the government has begun to take measures. The solution to prediabetes and diabetes needs to be established through the establishment of health plans for new patients throughout the country. Promote effective models to prevent this disease."

In 2009, the cost of medical insurance for diabetics in the United States was approximately US$11,700 per person. The cost of medical insurance for non-diabetics was approximately US$4,400. The annual Medicare expenditure for patients with diabetes complications doubled to US$20,700.

At present, there are 27 million people with diabetes in the United States, which is one of the fastest growing diseases in the country. It is estimated that 67 million people are pre-diabetics. These people are asymptomatic and most do not know that they have this disease. Experts predict that in 2010, one third of newborns will suffer from diabetes during their lifetime, and related complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, and nerve damage will occur.

The report also focused on obesity and the relationship with diabetes. Overweight and obesity are a major factor in diabetes. At present, two-thirds of adults and 17% of children in the United States are overweight or obese, which greatly increases the number of potential diabetics. In fact, more than half of obese adults in the United States have prediabetes or diabetes, and studies have also shown that they are overweight from 5,000 to 7,000 grams. The risk of type 2 diabetes doubles, and the risk of overweight is 7,000 to 11,000 grams, and the risk will increase threefold.

Intervention in lifestyles and reduce obesity: Through public health activities and the widespread use of health programs that prevent obesity, the number of people with prediabetes or diabetes can be reduced by nearly 10 million.

Early intervention and prevention of prediabetes: Community-based interventions can reduce the prediabetes' diabetes population by 3 million. Changing lifestyle and moderate weight loss prevented or delayed the development of prediabetes by 58%.

Diabetes Drug Control and Care Programs: Through medications and care to help control diabetes and reduce complications, United Health Group is working with community pharmacies to implement diabetes control programs.

Diabetes-Controlled Lifestyle Intervention Strategies: Promote public-private partnerships and establish nationwide diabetes-controlled lifestyle intervention strategies at the grass-roots level.
