Relationship between pre- and post-pregnancy mothers' childhood illness and childhood childhood leukemia Mothers' illness and medication during pregnancy (prescription, over-the-counter and illicit drugs) may be associated with childhood leukemia risk. Kwan ML and his colleagues in Oakland, Calif., used the Northern California Childhood Leukemia Study (1995-2002) to evaluate these issues. The researchers selected 365 children under the age of 15 who were diagnosed with leukemia and control children whose age, gender, Latin ethnicity, and maternal race matched. The patient's illness and medication data from pre-pregnancy to breastfeeding were obtained by interviewing the subject's mother and using conditional logistic regression. The results showed that the mother's history of influenza/pneumonia was associated with a significant increase in the risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children (odds ratio [OR]=1.89, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.24-2.89), but This risk is not significant for normal ALL (OR=1.41, 95% CI: 0.75-2.63). A similar increase in risk was observed in mothers with a history of sexually transmitted diseases. The use of iron supplements may reduce the risk of ALL (OR=0.67, 95% CI: 0.47-0.94). Kwan et al concluded that if the mother reported a history of influenza/pneumonia and sexually transmitted diseases before and after pregnancy, her child's risk of developing leukemia increased, suggesting that mother infection may be the cause of leukemia. In addition, mother iron supplementation may help prevent childhood leukemia. ——Midi Medical Network
